There has been racing at Salisbury Racecourse for several hundred years and many of the greats have won at the track, including early stars Gimcrack (1768) and Eclipse (1769). The likes of Sun Chariot (1941), Mill Reef (1970) and Brigadier Gerard (1970) graced the turf at the Wiltshire venue in the 20th century, while, more recently, Sir Percy, winner of the 2006 Derby, and Look Here, winner of the 2008 Oaks, both won at the track. These days, about 16 Flat race meetings take place each year between early May and mid-October. Highlights of the racing calendar at the course include the listed Cathedral Stakes (June) and Upavon Fillies’ Stakes (August), as well as the Group 3 Sovereign Stakes (August) and the Dick Poole Fillies’ Stakes, a race confined to two-year-olds.

SALISBURY RACECOURSE MAP 6c5b1f
Right handed. A loop course, and despite the run-in of seven furlongs (with a right-handed elbow after three furlongs), those ridden handily can gain an advantage as the gallop is often on the steady side around the sharp loop section. The straight course is uphill throughout the last half-mile and rather testing, especially for early season two-year-olds, so an ability to see out the trip thoroughly is important. Races over a mile and three quarters are started without stalls.
