A Goodwood Cup that promised a rematch of the first 2 in the Gold Cup turned out to be all about tactics, Quickthorn under Tom Marquand slipping the field, as the combination had in last year's Lonsdale Cup, the beaten jockeys' collective view to the stewards that the leader was going too fast not ed by the evidence, Quickthorn at no stage looking like he was overforcing the issue.

QUICKTHORN is a smart stayer with a good strike rate, but he's surely not so good as the bare result suggests, for the second time in a year allowed to slip his field and never looking likely to be caught; led, went well clear early, 20 lengths up 5f out, pushed along over 3f out, shaken up 2f out, kept on well, unchallenged.

EMILY DICKINSON (IRE) remains in good form, emerging best of those that had run in the Gold Cup, the winner long gone by the time she took second, however; patiently ridden, steady headway after 2f out, kept on well final 1f, took second close home.

COLTRANE (IRE) remains in good form, shaping as well as any, just allowing the winner way too much rope; led main group, travelled well, effort 2f out, clear of rest early in final 1f, no impression on winner, caught for second close home.

GIAVELLOTTO (IRE) who sweated up beforehand, to a large extent confirmed the improvement he'd shown in the Yorkshire Cup 11 weeks earlier, coming from a similar position to the runner-up; held up, effort over 2f out, stayed on, nearest at the finish.

COURAGE MON AMI failed to meet expectations, the ground softer than previously and keener than ideal as well, best judged for now on his Gold Cup form; waited with, not settle fully, effort over 2f out, not quicken, no extra late on.

BROOME (IRE) his stable second string, was again below form; in touch, ridden over 3f out, not quicken, weakened final 1f.
