A rather different make-up than typical for the race, 3 of the last 4 winners having contested the St Leger on their previous start, 4 of the 5 this time coming here from handicap company, the first 2 most progressive in such contests and finding further improvement, though it helped that the pair with the best form clearly weren't at their best.

SUBSEQUENT (IRE) had been progressing well in handicaps and overcame the rise in class to justify good , looking a smart young stayer; held up, effort entering straight, hampered soon after, headway to lead over 1f out, in command soon after, kept on well; he's entered in the Old Rowley Cup, though his stable has other contenders for the race and that might come a bit soon.

ALLONSY from a stable with a fine record in the race and out of Alyssa, who won this in 2016, made a fine attempt to repeat the feat, progressing again on her first start out of handicap company; led, shaken up early in straight, headed over 1f out, left behind by winner, stayed on; she would need to prove herself on the surface, but the Fleur de Lys at Lingfield might be an option for going one better in listed company.

PAPPANO had plenty to find at this level and ran well upped in grade, though his attitude left quite a bit to be desired; close up, shaken up entering straight, carried head awkwardly, hung left, looked none too keen.

GO DADDY (IRE) was below his best and hard to see an obvious excuse; slowly into stride, held up, shaken up 4f out, made no impression.

TABLETALK (IRE) looked the pick on the strength of his form in winning the Melrose, but he was unable to reproduce that effort in a rather different type of race and on softer ground; waited with, shaken up entering straight, not quicken, no extra late on.
